Creating a separate website for mobile vs. making it responsive?

I’m currently looking to make my website accessible on mobile and I was wondering whether I should attempt to make my current website responsive or to create a separate domain for the mobile version.

Twitter and other big companies follow the convention of creating a separate mobile version for their websites (example: m.twitter.com).

Are there any advantages to either and which approach would be ideal, when?
