How safe is "Send Error Report"?

Is anyone aware of any investigations into 'Error Reports' that are sent back to software vendors when their products go wrong?

I'm aware that many of these error reports ask the user before the report is sent - but of all those I have seen, they assure the user that no PII is included in the report.

I wonder to what degree this is true.
