How to differentiate yourself as a freelance web developer

Being a freelance developer is not easy.

There is so much supply on the market that it's very hard to compete with other developers.

Almost everyone tries to compete on the price and this is a road to the bottom.

And no wonder why you're not satisfied with your job.

Unless you can differentiate yourself in a meaningful way, the client will go for a cheaper option.

Maybe not the cheapest, but definitely not for your offer if you're the most expensive one and don't look any different than others.

Most clients don't know the difference between website prices for example.

It's your job to communicate your value.

So let me give you 3 quick tips that I've been able to implement myself on my website - https://andriy.space and that has been working really well for me.

  1. Niche down. Everyone is a generalist these days. If you want to gain clarity with your marketing, make it easier to get high paying clients - you have to become a specialist. Pick one particular niche that you have experience with (and ideally enjoy doing) and start focusing on it more in your marketing and sales pages. Just make sure that the niche that you've picked has money and the problem that you're solving is an expensive one, otherwise, it will be hard to get paid top dollars.

  2. Know your client's problems and desires. Once you have niched down, it will be much easier to understand your customer, their problems and desires. Show them that you understand them and how you can help them. I suggest that you use long-form landing pages which will also help you with SEO. Here is an example of one that I've created for my other site - https://progmatiq.com/wordpress-web-development-company

  3. Communication is key. Niching down and understanding your customer is great, but if you can't communicate with them - everything else doesn't really matter that much. So you have to listen to your customers, understand their pain and offer solutions. Sometimes they might say that they need X, but if you know that there is a better way to do things - educate them. They will appreciate it. And it will help you get more credibility in their eyes.

I hope these tips were helpful.
