If not for programming, what would you do?

I like to ask this question from time to time.

Roll back the clock 100 years and what would you be doing? Surely not any kind of programming or IT - computers didn't exist yet. Teacher? Lawyer? Laborer? Baker? Some sort of math science? Doctor?

The last couple weeks I've been remodeling my bathroom. I enjoy a little manual labor from time to time; we choose a room of our 100 year old house once a year and completely gut it down to the studs - new insulation, windows, doors, drywall, etc... We have 1 room left after the bathroom.

I also have a thing for brick work and landscaping - having built a brick pizza oven, flagstone patio and outdoor fireplace, etc...

Last night, I was finishing / mudding my brothers drywall in his sunroom addition. I've gotten quite good at it over 6 years of doing mine. You can find art in any job and by all means, I'm not a pro, but when you take a step back, look at the room and say that came out pretty good - it's nice to see something exist and will exist for decades that doesn't go away when you pull the power.

Another point that came to mind last night was, what if this happened in reverse? Without having gone to college, out of high school, I should of become a laborer. What if I became a general contractor and while working on the same room, thought about becoming a programmer?

So what else interests you? Would you be a sci-fi writer? Accountant? Chef? Do you do a little of this anyways on your down time?
