What are the advantages of using a statically typed language to build an API?

The rhetoric states that when building a widely used internal API, it's essential to use a statically typed language such as Java. On the flip side, I find that this limits hiring decisions (with a rise in Rails and JavaScript devs). What makes strong static typing so important?
