What tools and methodologies do you use for architecting specific parts/features of a system?

I would like to know how software architects plan things and share ideas. A couple of questions :

• Do you use pen and paper first to write down your thoughts?
• How do you communicate with your team members about the architecture, especially when you are working remotely?
• Any specific tools that help you share and explain things easily?

Any specific insights, tips etc will be highly appreciated.
