The problem with doing pair programming, especially within distributed teams, is that developers are especially opinionated people that don't like to be challenged, not when they work, at least.
They don't want their work to be criticised while they're doing it, and they don't want to argue with another developer on why something they're doing is not right or the best way to do it.
It's the same in open-source software. Knowing how to collaborate with other developers irrespective of your differences is a great skill to have as a developer and one that is sort after by companies today.
