Hi Everyone! Thank you for doing this AMA. π I find it very difficult when choosing a color scheme for my designs! Is there any trick that I can follow?
Been there!
Here's a method I learnt that has helped me a bunch!
That being said, try starting with an open source color scheme like Material UI or Open Color and play around with them until they feel yours.
This is actually a very good and hard question that I believe everyone of us is facing :). I normally have my main colors set based on the logo file, and generate the color scheme based on those colors. Lately I found this tool from TailwindCSS is very useful in generating palettes of a certain color. Another great tool is Canva color palette is awesome too, you just need to upload a photo and it will generate the related color scheme. The easily trick: pick a color and test it with color picker ;) Hope it helps
1 - Make sure it passes colour contrast test! Especially for buttons! webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker
2 - Colours and branding are close to each other. I'd recommend starting to explore what colours mean to different communities and why. For example, original McDonalds chose red for much of their colour palette because there's some evidence that the colour red makes humans feel hungry and they eat more!
There's a great book for a very in-depth look at this! hive.co.uk/Product/Kassia-St-Clair/The-Secret-Livβ¦
3 - Always make sure you consider neutral light colours like white, light blues, beige etc. and for dark mode, the opposites of those :)
Awesome! Thank you a lot for the tips Sid & Maya Shavin π
Thank you Eriol Fox! Definately going to read the book you suggested. π
I totally, totally second all the answers provided here!
It's important to consider the effect/feel/experience you intend to create with whatever you're designing. Colors are proven to have a psychological effect on users, hence, it's expected that we duly think this through when selecting colors - the effect of certain colors on various individuals, with respect to what you're designing, be it brand identity, digital products, etc (yes, some people actually have hormonal responses to certain colorsπ).
Also, it's important to look out for key factors such as contrast.
Finally, the visual appeal is just as important as the functionality of the product being designed - your design has gotta look just as good, as it works!π
coolors.co does a good job for me.
