Ask them if they have ever read "Don't Make Me Think" by Steve Krug or "100 Things Every Designer Needs to Know About People" by Susan Weinschenk.

I honestly don't know a single UX professional that has not read these books. These book contain some of the basic principles of how UX should be approached. While not the be-all to end-all, they provide a solid stone in the foundation of UX.

Been there. Done that and then some. I would hope the anyone asking the questions is at least familiar with the materials in question. In our process, these books are typically mentioned at the start of the conversation. It get's much deeper and specific as the conversation progresses. If the person says they haven't read these books, I know not to venture too deep since they won't be familiar with it's contents. That's when I move on to other UX based topics and areas of discovery. However, if they say "yes" and I discover through discussion they have lied about it, as a few have done in the past, the conversation usually falls off at that point.

How to know if someone has read one of those books ? Just read them by yourself, at least one, then you'll know what to ask ;)
