Big fan! What is your process for writing? Creating content that is understandable by a large audience can't happen by accident.
Hi Denny!
Thanks so much for stopping by! Here's what I try to do, (but it's not a hard and fast rule)
I try to write the content right at the point where I'm coming out of learning it with fresh eyes and moving into deeper understanding. If I know a subject really deeply, it can be hard for me to remember the basic stuff I got stuck on. That said, I also write fast and furiously on things I have deeper knowledge on as soon as 1) it's been sitting in my brain rattling around, poking me for a while, or 2) enough people have asked me about it on twitter/at conferences that I feel like I'd be letting people down without giving them a deeper resource
I try to make the demos first- I try to make things that will be exciting for people to play around with because it's easier to learn that way. Emotion attaches to the limbic system and makes it easier to recall information. I try to play off that because sometimes that's the thing that will keep you going through the learning process
Then I sit down to write, and I usually try to write without interrupting myself. By that I mean, any images to be inserted, any word I can't remember, any resource I have to look up, I highlight in red. That way I can keep my train of thought and fill in the gaps later.
The biggest thing I try to do is to look at the article from the point of view of someone trying to learn the material, instead of thinking what an expert might think of it. Experts will always disagree on how to teach a subject, and you can second guess yourself a lot by tuning your brain into this radio station. Turn the knob until you get to a station for people who need the help.
Hope that's helpful!
