[Back to Basics] git merge vs rebase: What are the differences according to you?

Hey folks

I am going to ask one simple question everyday under “Back to basics” series and gather responses. The idea is to help beginner programmers get answers to commonly asked questions and find different perspectives from programmers like you.

This particular question pops up everytime I discuss git with beginners. :) So, how would you explain the differences between git merge and rebase to a friend?
