I wrote a PostCSS plugin to generate gradients which loosely resemble original images; useful for slow connections, and makes a site appear to load faster by displaying something instead of a blank space. You can try a live demo; note that you can simulate a slow connection with Chrome using the developer tools, under the Network tab, select the 'No throttling' drop-down and choose a 2G connection.
