How do you make people notice your Github repository?

I have read a few good tips around the web, like adding a good README, building a live demo page, sharing on certain programming subreddits etc. in order to get visitors and, ultimately, stars and forks in a Github repo.

What I would like to know is how you do it, how you get people to notice your work and how you present your work so that people are tempted to try it out.
