Linux fans and their idea of open source

This is a discussion rather than a question.

What do Linux fan boys mean when they say "Open source"? Cause I think they go from open source to "We can handle it!".

I use Ubuntu!

Hello? Cause it's significantly faster than Windows! Talk about boot times, application launch time, working with files, that's what I'm talking about! Plus, Linux systems are generally great for programming, some languages —Python, C++ — come pre-installed.

The hunt

Last week I was restless looking for drivers for my Notebook on which I clean installed Ubuntu 18. Trust me, I did enable proprietary software and checked for additional drivers, to no avail. I just have to bear with the awful experience, like the brightness being too bright otherwise too dim. It was perfect with Windows! The best part? It wasn't something I had to worry about on Windows. As it turns out, the manufactures didn't write drivers for any other than Windows.

Take away

During my "Find drivers hunt", I found that Fedora intentionally makes it hard for users to install proprietary software. OpenSuse focuses on to encourage open source software.

My question.

Don't they know computers work their best using software created by their manufacturers?
