VoIP service rules modern-day communications. It turns computers into telephones. If you don’t believe me, just pull that smartphone out of your pocket. Is that a phone or a small computer?

VoIP converts your audio into a data stream. This stream is then broken into data packets and sent to your VoIP provider via IP.

Sounds complicated? Well, maybe a little. To understand VoIP, you may want to take a closer look at business VoIP service providers. They play a crucial role in keeping your business calls, SMS, and even faxes (yes, some people still use fax in the age of secure email) flowing.

What is the business VOIP service provider?

To put it simply, a firm or professional service which provides VOIP services is called a business VOIP service provider. I mean, this does not have to be a big-name phone company. A VoIP service provider can be your neighboring IT shop around the corner, running an Asterisk PBX.

Because Voice over IP protocol uses the Internet, the barriers to providing phone service have been relatively low. Providing telephone service while complying with the billion regulatory requirements is a different story. But we wouldn’t go there in this article.

Since VoIP is an Internet service, VoIP providers essentially sell access to their software as a subscription. In case you didn’t know – this is called SAAS, software as a service model.

How VoIP Works in 5 Sentences

VoIP uses packet switching. In layman’s terms, it takes your packets containing voice information and sends them to appropriate Internet addresses. VoIP consists of several different protocols. The most popular protocol for establishing communication between VoIP devices is a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). SIP governs dialing and call routing. SIP also manages the end-to-end transmission of voice data. The other part of VoIP is a Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP). RTP manages the actual flow of data over the data stream.

Benefits of VoIP

Ok, enough of that complicated technical stuff. After all, this is what business VoIP service providers are for. We need them so that we wouldn’t need to employ an army of nerds to keep our phones and computers running.

Cost-effective

Inflation aside, VoIP is way cheaper than the good old traditional telecom. That’s because VoIP technology uses existing IP networks. No more running of multiple sets of wires around your office. VoIP offers good saving options to customers and VoIP providers simultaneously. VoIP providers no longer have to operate pricey phone switches and connect them to peering points. They use almighty Internet for your voice traffic and save insane amounts of money.

Offers exclusive features

VoIP has transformed the internal company’s phone switches. Ten years ago, I remembered seeing a phone system hanging on the back wall of every business. These days most business PBXs take the hosted route. Hosted PBX will save your business time and money in more ways than one. For starters, you no longer need to maintain an on-premises piece of fine telephone hardware. Since the landline service is going bye-bye, there is really no point in having a “foreign object” hidden in the network closet. You don’t need to maintain either the object itself or the closet, for that matter.

Hosted PBX is perfectly capable of delivering standard telephone features such as call screening, forwarding, caller ID, etc.

Conclusion

The cloud phone system for small businesses continues to evolve. It has a ton of potential for future development. If you haven’t switched to VoIP yet, don’t worry. You will. Big-name phone companies and smaller VoIP service providers are not leaving us any choice in the matter because old tech is quickly being phased out. The time of traditional POTS lines is coming to an end.
