Week Four(4): Creating A Cgpa Calculator.
HOW TO CALCULATE GPA/CGPA USING MICROSOFT EXCEL.
INTRODUCTION
The average Nigerian university student especially those that are fresh out of secondary school and new to the University grading system, struggles with the calculation of their GPA/CGPA. This week's project focuses on the creation of a CGPA calculator of the Nigerian universities.
WHAT IS A CGPA? CGPA simply means Cumulative Grade Point Average. CGPA is derived by adding the TOTAL CREDIT POINTS (TCP) for all semesters to date and dividing by the TOTAL CREDIT UNITS(TCU) for all the semesters to date.
What is A GPA? GPA simply means Grade Point Average. Your GPA is obtained from either letter grades or percentages that you obtained from your subjects in a completed semester. However, you can calculate your GPA by dividing the total number of acquired quality Points by the total number of course units received.
THE GRADING SYSTEM IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES.
The grading systems implemented across universities in the country have not been uniformed as the Polythecnics and College of education uses the four-point grading system and the five-point grading system is used by the Federal universities. For the purpose of this week's project,
we will be focusing on the grading system of THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY AKURE, SCHOOL OF SCIENCES.
This university uses the five-point grading system and thus, we have created a CGPA/GPA Calculator that allows its students to generate their results in a fast easy and reliable manner. How this CGPA/GPA Calculator is created with excel will be documented in this post.
CREATING A CGPA/GPA CALCULATOR WITH MICROSOFT EXCEL.
Firstly, we made a GPA Calculator as this will be quite useful for New students (100 level) that do not have previous grade points to calculate a CGPA. We made a table format that allows the student to input their marks for each course throughout the semester (Test/Exam) and the total marks is automatically calculated.
With the aid of the “IF function(The IF function in Excel compares existing data in the spreadsheet against the value you set in the IF function’s Logical_test field,It then returns one of two values depending on whether the comparison was true or false).”, the student’s grade and grade point e.g A =5.00 respectively is automatically calculated.
The grade points is then multiplied by the TOTAL LOAD UNITS and the CREDIT POINTS for each course is calculated. Then, the Total Load Units(course units) column is added up with the use of the SUM FUNCTION"which adds all the numbers in a range of cells" and the total is automatically calculated and this is also done with the Total Credit Points.
The GPA is then automatically calculated by dividing the cell with the TCP by the cell that has the TLU.
Furthermore, the difference between the GPA Calculator and the CGPA Calculator is the added formulas and column. The new rows and column allows the student to input the TLU and TCP of the previous semesters and also input that of the present semester. It also calculates the Cummulative TLU and TCP of the semesters till date and the CGPA is then generated automatically by dividing the cell with the Cummulative TCP by the cell with the Cummulative TLU. In addition the student's degree classification(i.e First Class) is automatically displayed.
CREATING THE CGPA MARKSHEET CALCULATOR.
The difference between the CGPA Marksheet calculator and the CGPA calculator is that while the calculates for one person at a time, the MARKSHEET Calculator can calculate for multiple persons. As a case study, we made a MARKSHEET for 400 Level students of the Department of Chemistry in THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY AKURE, SCHOOL OF SCIENCES. Columns for Matric number and names were added and the user needs to only input the TLU and TCP of the previous and current semester and the GPA and CGPA is automatically calculated.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, this post has been able to establish that a CGPA CALCULATOR can be made with the use of Microsoft Excel and this calculator makes it easy for students to keep up with their Academic performances over the Semester/Session.
