What is the difference between ECMAScript and JavaScript?

Hi Everyone!

I am really going to get in the habit of asking a lot of questions as I am thirsty to learn.

I have read a lot of blogs, articles and tutorial talking about ECMAScript in relation to JavaScript. While I have googled a lot to know the difference between these 2, all the answers I get is overwhelming and I still can understand the differences.

Can someone more experienced be kind enough to explain to me the difference between these 2? Are they different languages? How can we write ECMAScript? Does it have its own syntax?

Thank you.
