Nothing much for now.
Talking about web monetization, growth of software developers in Africa
Thanks for this great question Saphash B The concept of web monetization is you as a creator, getting paid for the contents you provide on the web when a web monetized user access these contents. These contents however can be blog posts, softwares, games, videos, songs, podcasts etc. If it can be on the web, it can be web monetized.
One thing is this, payments to a creator are based on various factors, one of which is how long a user spend on your content. Also as a user, you do not need to worry about your web monetization subscription because no matter how many contents you use it on in a month, you're completely covered. So perhaps you accessed contents that you do not find interesting or useful an Coil streams money to the creator, you still have nothing to worry about.
Implementing web monetization can be done in less than 5 steps, also there's no gatekeeping to the number of audience a creator needs to have to start using web monetization. You as a creator get paid in real time from each user so, you earn from 2 users or earn from 200,000 users. You can start whenever you like.
As a creator using web monetization, you have the ability to mark some contents as public and some extra contents as premium. Also once a user is web monetized, you do not need to worry about them choosing to pay or not, all the payments are done automatically.
Yes, web monetization can be used on any website. If it's your website, you have absolute control of it, however, if you're a creator using a certain platform, then the platform provider needs to enable web monitization. Example: Hashnode as a platform, allows its users to use web monetization. Web monetization works by allowing users send money directly to the payment pointer attached to the head tag of the web page they're on.
Hello Ayodeji Oladimeji Really great questions. Web monetization compared to ads and subscriptions can be referred to a solution that solves all the downsides of ads and subscription. From inter-border currency conversion problems in the subscription model, to privacy intrusion, targeted ads and misinformation in the ads model. Few organizations using web monetization already are : Hashnode , Youtube , Twitch , and a more comprehensive list here Grant for the web is a body set up by Mozilla, Creative Commons and Coil to push and support the adoption of web monetization all around the web.
Hi Emeka Chukwu This is a great question and one which is currently being treated. For now, the best and easiest place to place web monetization is the browser, however, a lot of works and adoption would be coming to native very soon. Hi Jerry Aaron This is a big one, as someone staying in a Country in Africa myself (Nigeria to be precise), I totally understand this. Now one good thing about web monetization from this angle is that, the current web monetization provider we have, which is Coil is intentional about users getting complete value out of a month subscription, so under no account would a user have any reason to subscribe twice in a month, irrespective of the amount of content they consume; the $5 would always be enough. However, from the angle of parity purchasing power for the user, the $5 I believe is constant for all users. cc Chris Lawrence Bring my friend from Grant for the web here to share more light on this.
