We all use them, whether it's AWS, DigitalOcean, Linode or maybe something else? The VPS'. As the term of a webhost has been greatly deprecated in the past and it's now either a hosted application for website development or a VPS.
I always had curiosity for how things work, so I manage my infrastructure from A to Z, but I'm wondering how many else does that? Or at least how many wants to.
What are your reasons for doing so? Maybe you prefer to have a touch on any detail or maybe there aren't good alternative options.

Please feel free to add details about which software you use and why you voted as you did :-)

I do a bit of both. It's important to know how to manage my own webserver, so I do that for certain projects. Most of the time I let someone else handle it so I don't have to bother with updates, hardware, security, uptime, logging, monitoring, etc. Running your own webserver is a great experience but it is definitely time consuming.
In an article I wrote about running a webserver , I pointed out that most people don't need to run their own.
Most people want to upload a website once and forget about it for a few years. If you're running your own webserver then you can't really do that.

I use VPS where the hardware is managed by a company, and manage the software etc myself. For a little while, twice, I also managed the hardware, but that sucked. The software updating etc also sucks to be honest. Configuration issues and regressions after updating dependencies are some of the most boring bugs to work on.
