Hello everyone,
So I keep hearing about the Digital Nomad Programmer, thinking that remote work seems like a thing that will just keep increasing in popularity, but when I ask people they seem to think that remote work is just not realistic and not common.
Can I hear from others about their thoughts on the actual size and health of this community? Where exactly are these people getting their work?
maybe the myths and legends are true ?
Thank you Hashnode :)
Well, I think there are two things mixed up here. Digital nomads do not have a real "base". Meaning they do not live somewhere fixed. They are traveling and work at the same time - almost all the time. And often jobs are smaller gigs from different opportunities. Often digital nomads choose "cheap" countries to travel too, to save money/ limit expenses.
On the other hand, there are remote employees, that often have a fixed base where they live and work. They just do not work in the office.
Surely, there are also hybrid combinations of both.
I for myself, work remote. I worked in many different countries such as US, UK, Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. So, I do move countries, but not as travel. I also built a life in each of the countries.
Remote jobs are becoming more and more common, but are still the minority of opportunities. My remote gigs happened because I had a non-remote job, but wanted to move. As I provided enough value to the employer, they agreed to let me work remote. It would not have been possible to start remote. (I work for Microsoft, btw). Same holds true for gigs at Google/Amazon and I think for most smaller companies too.
Communication is the key when doing your remote work. Use slack, Skype, team or any communication tool to have a conversation with your teammates going. So you will not feel alone.
Interested in what you get to Peter Lake. I have found it a bit tricky too, or maybe I'm not optimistic enough.
Firstly, I started as a freelancer and I really enjoyed working whenever I want, wherever I want.
Before I joined Hashnode, I had a terrible experience while I was applying for one big company in my town where I saw how the state actually is and decided to start my own remote career.
So far, I can only say that it is truly awesome. I find myself more productive, happier, motivated... basically, I found my dream job.
There are tons of groups on Facebook where you can search for jobs, such as:
and many more.
Also, you have platforms such as Upwork and PeoplePerHour. Even tho they are oriented towards freelancers, around 20% of all the jobs are full time (minimum).
I've been a part of a local coworking space, where we have remote workers and I've been on regional conferences with over 600 delegates from coworking spaces and everyone agrees that this is the future.
By the latest trends, corporations are making creative spaces and giving more "home-office days" to employees because they seem happier and more productive.
Jump on our band-wagon as soon as possible 😎
P.S. Here is the list of 900+ startups hiring remotely
I am most productive on the days when work remotely(from Home). Well, there are various factors. Primary one being, I can save 4 hours of travel back-and-forth between home and office.
In India, most of the employers prefer the employees to be in office during the defined work hours. However this thinking has been changing since last few years. There are lot more understanding between management that, working from remote place(or home) in mutually benefited case for the Employer and Employee. Remote Work is going to be the future! I can see it coming full fledged.
Remote work is the future if you ask me. There are lots of successful companies that are fully remote. Gitlab, Basecamp, Buffer, InVision, etc.
🎉Team Hashnode is also working 100% remotely 🎉
I recommend everyone to read REMOTE: Office Not Required before deciding whether to go remote. Some people don't like that style of work and prefer face-to-face communication most of the time, while some people love it. It all depends on the person.
I'm 100% for remote work. My productivity has increased immensely and I have the chance to work for any company in the world while enjoying Novi Sad and work-life balance.

Edit: Thanks for the inspiration Peter Lake! I just blogged about this topic 😃

I've started working remotely 4 years ago. I can't even think about going back and working in an office 9 to 5!
