You know what a codpiece is, right? Well... One sec, lemme hit my bookshelves...
Codlance -- a codpiece with spikes or a bladed attachment designed to discourage enemies from attacking the groin in close quarters. They were often painted in decorative colours to draw attention to the danger.

I think it was removed in later printings as were a lot of other 'sexually suggestive' items because 'rawz whut abuts teh childrens'... yeah, it's not in my 1986 hardcover copy. (Which is the same general book but the title changed "arms and armaments" to "arms and weapons" -- that I rarely use due to the omissions and dumbed-down language.)
Basically, don't try to knee a guy wearing mail armor in the groin during 14th and 15th century warfare.
You're probably safe, few if any people would know that one apart from your SCA types. I just thought it was kind of funny. Kind of like when "BattleTech" became "Classic BattleTech" and people started abbreviating it "CBT" -- which... well... not a term you want associated with a game that's supposed to be child-friendly. Or "Experts Exchange" not entirely realizing why their domain didn't always draw in the type of people they wanted.
