I don't know about Jack for sure, but all work and no play makes me a dull boy.
I have been looking for a new hobby and wonder what I can pick up. I currently visit the shooting range to blow off some steam, but that's the only thing I do outside work.
Pretty sure, we have some interesting people here with some exciting hobbies, so bring it on! :D
My hobbies span very diverse areas. They include gaming, sketching, chess, badminton, making digital music, parkour. I'm always looking to expand my hobbies out of the areas that utilize computers :)
I have a ton of hobbies! Way to many actually... 😳 Working out, cooking (this one is super new), crystal stick juggling, flow hooping, belly dancing, gaming, watching anime, learning random bits of everything, knitting, crochet... Seriously, an odd bit of everything! Sometimes I just see something cool and I just have to try it. 😊
A lot of developers play some kind of musical instrument. Surprisingly a lot.
I play (or try to) classical guitar. Also got into photography several years ago
I love cycling a lot. I have three separate bicycles, which I service myself. There are also few other hobbies:
I love music, I play classical music on the Piano and the Violin in the evening hours while I'm not coding
I'm a font-end developer, in a typical day of good sprint week, I would say two sentences to a guy sits next to me "Good morning Erin" and "See you tomorrow".
Since most of us the Coder spends roughly 8 hours a day staring at the screen, I will definitely don't want to bring any digital into my hobby.
I enjoy watch my Budgies singing and calling one another, I also have two doves and they wake me up every morning with their beautiful cooing. I have green front yard, which I often turns it into water park and play with my daughter.
it's really much fun to turn yourself into 5 years old, so you can play with you kid.
1) Write poems
2) Walk (a lot)
3) Martial Arts (Kendo to be exact)
4) Play table tennis

I like both walking and running since it's basically the opposite of what I do in my daily live (sitting and thinking vs. moving and not thinking). It clears the mind in a sort of meditative way when you get your body moving, without thinking too hard about it.
On the other hand I got a great interest in the gastronomic world. Cooking and tasting food, beer and similar provides some possibilities that corresponds very well with my geekiness. There is a lot of different things that you can really dive into. There is a lot of interesting tastes and smells out there, and I find it really interesting to experiment with bringing them forward, and figuring out where they come from. Beer generally consists of 4 ingredients, the main one being water, but you can still make it taste pretty much like you want to.
Almost of time I spend for reading/writing and the piano exersices :)
Yoga, Video Games, Movies and don't ask me why but I love to watch standford lectures in youtube (Physics, Computing and Biology).
I play volleyball in a hobby-mixed team for many years now. Now that I'm old the results are two meniscal tears and a screwed right shoulder from spiking.
I added a good amount (3 times a week for more than an hour each) of barbell strength training more recently (almost a year now) to support playing volleyball. The idea: strengthen tendons and muscles to allow my body the strenuous jumping, turning, ... and additionally alleviate/prevent back issues from all-day sitting in front of my monitors.
Further I have lost 60 pound primarily through intermittent fasting (together with my gall bladder) and I'm somewhat nutrition/health obsessive, now: calorie counting, meal planning, cooking, baking etc. with proper macro distribution ...
Ehmm, yes, so back to your question: don't play volleyball, too taxing. But do strength training, general fitness stuff, and use your time to eat and drink healthy ...
Board games! I used to play video games but board games have really replaced them now. My collection over 100 and there are so many board games I want to experience.
I play ice hockey 2x week.
I play guitar (have been lead vocalist/singer in a couple of local rock tribute bands).
When I can get out, I also love the outdoors and nature. Hiking, mountain biking and bird photography. Amateur painting/drawing.
Oh, yeah...and I like playing NHLXX on Xbox (pretty much the only game I play...though occasionally I'll play different versions of Burnout).
In the past year or so I've been learning a new stack and trying to launch some side projects (setlistic.com is the first), so unfortunately my other loves have not been getting as much airtime. Just wish there were like 4 of me. :-)
This weekend, I and 6,430 other people ran the BAA Half Marathon in Boston. I started running six or seven years ago when I was 250lbs, the 40" waist on my jeans was getting tight, and I lost my breath going upstairs to bed. Now, I'm wearing smaller jeans than when I was in high school. Running is literally saving my life. And, my son loves going out in our jogging stroller and seeing the world.
I do open source on the side. Mostly fun little node.js projects like statetable.com and catalogopolis.xyz.
Now that my kid is older, I have a little more time for my vintage computer collection again. It's mostly 8-bits from the 1980s, although there's a Mac Plus and some 90s Macs in there too. Last week, I started working on a 9" green screen Apple //c monitor. Someone must have dropped it long ago. It works great, but the case is cracked in a couple places and someone fixed it with white glue. Plus, it's yellowed over the years like lots of plastic from those days. I'm repairing the broken parts with PlastiWeld and painting them as close to the original color as possible. The rest of the case (and the Apple //c's case) is going to get Retr0brighted in the Spring so it looks as good as new.
Cooking (it's the only way I will eat healthy)
Dancing (met all my wives this way)
Hiking (don't get to often, but love it every time)
Reading (fiction, non-fiction, anything that I enjoy)
