To explain recursion to 5 year old, I'd show him how dog chases its tail and go in circles till he is exhausted 😂🤣
I've never met a child that age that didn't already deeply understand recursion. e.g. "...but why?" is a recursive function.
Recursion is like eating your cake and having it back, until you want no more.
eenie meenie miney mo that's a classic recursion. you do it over and over again till no one is left . when one is out you start from the top :)

BTW. I saw this on Kickstarter. There's a few more of that kind.
Basically, do the same thing over and over, but with new information every time. But remember to tell it to stop at some point, or it won't!

Keep two mirrors in front of each other and ask kid what is happening? Now the kid will explain recursion in a better way to you :P
