However, if you're looking for something you can customize from the ground up, then Socket.io is basically the standard for any type of chat widget or application. It's basically what jQuery was for JavaScript; Socket.io makes sure you have fallbacks to the traditional web socket so that the chat dialogue between users is steady and consistent with backward compatibility.
