I think "keeping pace with the ecosystem" is not actually a good goal for most people. I don't personally try to keep up with everything that happens. If the tools you know already work well for you, there's no reason to stop using them. Truly good ideas will last for a long time; being a year or two behind won't hurt you.

Even if you're learning things for the first time, I'd recommend starting small. When starting with React, so many people get bogged down with trying to learn too many things at the same time. We made create-react-app so that it's easier to focus on the basics, which is all you need in many cases.
