Hey James! COVID-19 had a huge impact on me.

Without COVID, I'd probably be traveling in Asia right now and building my business from the road :)

I was also using my travel blog income to pay all my expenses, which has basically gone to zero. All the customers from my SaaS business lost their income, too.

It's been a bit like starting over, which has been extremely hard.

On the other hand, it has come with a lot of opportunities:

• Pivoting the market of our SaaS product / diversifying
• Creating the newsletter, which is the reason I'm doing this AMA now!

I won't lie, it's a struggle, but as long as I can do something every day to move my projects forward, I feel like it's a win :)

I only started speaking because I wanted to recruit people to join my team at my last company. And I wanted it badly enough to speak publicly, despite it being one of my biggest fears.

In that sense, I think you have to find your "Why?" :)

Or, just apply to a bunch of conferences and once you get accepted, just say "Yes" and then figure it out somehow.

That could be what pushes you to do it the first time. Then you'll be hooked :)

Anything worth doing will be criticised by someone.

If you don't want to get criticised, do nothing, be nothing.

Getting criticism shows me that at least someone cared enough to respond, as opposed to finding whatever I did or wrote so neutral that it had no impact on them.

Mostly, recruiters aren't going to look at your code or think too deeply about it.

I would just make sure your code is in the language of the job you're applying for, and is ideally in the framework (for instance, React or Vue).

Put it in the README so the recruiter can obviously tell what framework it is.

However, my MAIN TIP for side projects is this:

Get someone to review your side project's code.

It will help the quality and set you apart from other candidates.

Bonus tip: Have some tests. Extra bonus if they are good tests.

Again, both of those things will really set your code apart, assuming that a hiring manager looks at it. They may or may not -- depends heavily on how recruitment works at the company.

I think if you ask anyone whose blog contributes to their income, they would unanimously tell you that learning SEO is the biggest ROI activity you can do early on.

Because if you have an SEO mindset, it helps you write a different type of content, which will have a compound effect on your blog's growth over time.

If it prevents you from writing, then I'd prefer writing. But I believe it's never too early to think about SEO!

1. How do you monetize your blog?

For me personally, my most monetized blog is about travel (itineraries, travel guides, things to do, etc) and it's monetized in two ways: affiliate marketing and advertising.

With affiliate marketing, you earn money by referring people to products or services. On my website, this is usually Airbnbs, hotels, tours, and travel and photography gear.

With ads, you can join different kind of ad networks depending on how much traffic your website receives and from where (geographically). The important thing to understand is that there are MANY more options besides Adsense. For instance, I'm a member of Mediavine.

I don't personally sell digital products but this is also a popular option.

2. At what point can you start monetizing your blog?

With affiliate marketing or selling your own digital products, you can do it right away. The important thing is to write articles that people are likely to search for when they are already looking to make a purchase (also called "commercial intent").

That said, there is a big difference between starting a website with the "mindset" of making money from it vs. having an existing website and trying to make money from it.

The latter is often much more difficult. I recommend that people start thinking about their monetization strategy before buying the domain, if possible.

3. How do you improve your position in search engine results?

This is a very big question! But the short answer is:

Look at Page 1 of Google for the keyword you want to rank for, figure out why those pages are ranking instead of you, and then do that for your website.

You may find those sites match the search intent better, cover more topics, have more backlinks, are on more authoritative websites, receive pagerank from internal links from other articles, etc.

Ultimately it's all about reverse-engineering why the top results are ranking and applying that to your website!

If you don't have any work experience, in my opinion, you need to apply to junior or entry-level positions.

There is no amount of side projects that can replace professional experience.

It's very important to know that managers and recruiters do not consider "years of knowing how to code" the same as "years of experience working in a tech team".

That said, you could definitely supplement your experience by freelancing in the meantime. I've hired four junior developers, and two of them started by freelancing.

I never had to hire a junior without any "paid experience" because frankly the market is competitive. Companies get to choose from hundreds of junior candidates.

First, i want to say that, theres difference between Fresh grad, and self-taught and coding bootcamp and the thing is that, none of 3 of em can have accurate answer about of good the person is. and yep, they are all having no work experience when they are gonna start apply, because how to get work experience before even land a job?

I disagree with u monica. I think a person still can land a job at mid or senior level without work experience company nowadays' job description doesnt being written like candidate has to have 3+ or 5+ years of experience, even though its senior level.

A good mindset programmer with ability to adapt is definitely what every great company are looking for, rather than having (no offense) 10 - 20 years of work experience.

When they are in workplace, they can definitely still ask online forum to other senior programmer who have been working for 10 - 20 years.

And also i dont think its a good idea to start freelance, its not easy unless u want to find client offline by going there and there IRL if u want to find online, then u have to have kinda celebrity status in the field (thats not fun).

My approach was that I decided I wanted to be independent and then took the steps I would need to achieve that. It included:

• Saving about 1/2 of my yearly salary (I was saving more than 50% anyways)
• Getting a visa that allows me to be self-employed in Germany
• Learning international taxes 🤓

It took me 10 months in total from deciding I wanted to quit to my last day at my job.

That said, the product I went full-time to build was in development for a full year before going full-time on it.

We got our first paying customer within a few days after I left my job.

But I didn't wait until we had proper revenue or anything like that. I was just confident it would work out (for whatever reason!)

Ultimately, you have to write content people find genuinely interesting enough they want to share it.

Often, I find that talking about your own experience in a way that people can apply your learnings to their own life does very well. It's unique, personal, and practical.

How can I monetize my audience?

Instead of thinking about it like "monetize my audience", I'd suggest thinking of it like, "How can I create something so useful that people will want to pay for it?"

Yes, you can use passive methods like ads and affiliate marketing. For a number of reasons, I don't think this works very well for a developer audience / technical content.

Instead, I would focus on learning what people in your sphere are struggling with and find out how you can help them.

I've both been hired from abroad and hired many people to my team who relocated to Germany.

These are my two tips for you:

1. You have to be "better" than the local market. "Better" can mean extremely skilled, hirable based on reputation, or (in my case) having an extremely niche skillset.
2. You need to learn the immigration laws. Make sure you qualify and be up front with prospective employers if you'll need a visa sponsorship. Bigger companies may have more resources to help relocate you.

The specifics depend a lot on the immigration laws and local scene, which I don't know much about. But I'd also recommend getting in some Facebook groups for expats in whatever city you want to move to!

On the immigration front, I'm sorted. Because I already have received my PR in Canada.

Since I've been playing the role of an engineering manager, my role became more of a generalist than a specialist.

And the tricky thing about Canada, is that, there's a lot of monopoly with respect to local experience. I've lived and worked in the US for 5 years, but, I found out that they still favor local experience.

It helped me get 1.2K subscribers in under two weeks.
