I grow Carnivorous Plants. In general, they're hard to find - and when you do find them, you only see the generic Drosera ("Octopus" Plant) or Dionaea ("Venus Fly Trap"). You don't often see the other kinds and variations. (There are hundreds of species). And then there is the misinformation about them - that they are hard to take care of, that you need a certain amount of humidity and yadda yadda yadda.
I think about growing my collection into a nursery every now and then. If I weren't programming, that's what I would do.
Oh you mean 'what do I want to be when I'm all grow'd-up??'
There's an old joke that comes from an indie movie about a Northern Ontario psychopath.
'If you are from Northern Ontario you are either a Hockey Player or a serial killer.. And I have weak ankles'
but seriously... I have an engineering background.. but before Uni I was more well rounded and did music and reading and drama and all kinds of other junk
And I've been a few things too: DJ, electronics tech, tree planter, groundskeeper, minimum wage-slave.
And volunteered; tutoring LDHD kids, 'green' type orgs (doing recycling assessments), non-confrontational mediator..
What I really wanted to be was a writer, and make indie movies.
So maybe one day fingers crossed
In the mean time, I find solving problems (and coding) relaxes my mind into that kind of zone-like zen state.
I don't ever expect to be good at it.. but will keep at it cause it's sometimes fun too
Singer, fir sure. because i love to listen to music while coding and sometime can start singing loud when issue is more complex and need to concentrate.
Since I work as a volunteer at Portuguese Red Cross, maybe nurse or medic. Out of my country, paramedic for sure :)
Either open a dog farm or professional racing driver.
Probably an English teacher. I didn't do an engineering/CS degree, I did English Literature. I only ended up doing software engineering by chance really.
I studied technical engineering, and I seriously considered a job in that field.
Alternatively (nontechnical) a tailor (surprise!). I love creating things, and I really like unique clothing. So I already started out with some costumes, however I might extend it to everyday stuff. I was on vacation in Japan over the past two weeks, and just seeing the way young people in Nagoya and Tokyo dress makes my heart beat faster. Especially searching through some of the small ateliers and stores in Shibuya was great fun and I got to see my share of Punk, Gothic, Lolita and Visual Kei clothing (though I did only buy a coat; too tall and need more money :D). If you plan to go there yourself, check out LaForet B1, however it is advisable to at least speak a bit of Japanese yourself ;)
I realized this very recently. I like talking about politics, sports and current affairs. I figure I would be a journalist if I didn't write code.
Architect was always my first choice.
Now a days, I plan to open a restaurant when I retire from programming - IMO one of the few industries where people spend money on it (so long as it's good) regardless of how the economy is.
Bike/Car Repairing or Chef/Road-Side Cafe.
I guess I would go for carpentry if i would go for a trade, if I would go for an academic Position: I always loved physics, chemistry, history and philosophy so maybe a teacher or researcher :)
But who knows :) I wanted to be a lot of different things in my lifetime ;D from ninja to kindergarden teacher ;D ....

Web and programming
If by programmer you mean professional coder or any ICT jobs that involves coding, then my answer would be one of the following:
