It was named as "git" as in "dumb person", although often ret-conned to "git" as in a silly pronunciation of "get", plus when they're not joking on twitter all the employees I know say "git" not "jit". Pretty conclusive really ;)
I really wonder how people came to the conclusion that it is a good idea to make English the lingua franca of the internet. The British alone are not sure how to pronounce things, the US citizens pronounce stuff differently in different counties, and then there are all the other places in the world, where English is a native language, too, where people pronounce stuff entirely different again.
Now, everyone should learn English, because that's a good way to communicate with everyone else in the world. However, how are we supposed to know how to pronounce things, if not even the natives actually know? Really bad. I suggest switching to an easier language... like Toki Pona.
Ee-ther? Ai-ther? ...-way, I go for /git/ and /gif/, because that's also the German pronunciation, and I know that I already talked to a ton of native speakers who pronounce it like that, so it can't be that wrong!
We are watching you, '6%' of people. You can hide but you can't run.
Funny, I say Git for GitHub, but jif for gif. Let the flame wars begin!!! 😈😈
It should be pronounced as JitHub. At least GitHub team wants us to call it like that. Yet I prefer to pronounce it as GitHub. It's more of habit than a logical reason.
Well, here's some logic that proves that the Github product team must consist of a bunch of foolish idiots - literally (you'll soon see what I mean.)
First of all, "jit" is another term for ejaculation.
Secondly, the word "git" (pronounced "/git/") is informal, British slang for a foolish or unpleasant person. Linus Torvalds gave that name to the version control system, after tons of work on the Linux kernal was pending or completed and was not being properly organized by him after the amount of developers on the team increased. They needed a "stupid content tracker", and he even said in an interview, "I'm an egotistical bastard, and I name all my projects after myself. First Linux, now Git."

Jit.. that must be a dialect thing. Maybe you don't have the 'G' sound?
I know for example that Thais can hardly say 'S', I was so shocked first time I was offered eyes in my drink (ice).
Alan Guitard Yeah she started commenting it as a joke on every comment around the time I posted here :D

I cannot believe people can be so ignorant when they point fingers at people's dialect. Be ashamed to tell people in one street that git is not jit, and then next street tell your folks ginger is jinjer not ginger. As they say, English is a funny language.
