Are there other universal app frameworks that's similar to Meteor? Particularly looking for other frameworks that similarly handles everything from database to hosting.
Well I actually started with Meteor and looked for an alternative as well. I thought React would be the one but then saw backbone. I like it but it didn't feel the same and then I ran into Ember.
Ember uses handlebars which is a lot like Meteor's spacebars templating engine. As far as being a full scale framework I have not seen anything like it. But similarly you can build a back-end framework using Mongodb and Express on Nodejs and either build the ember app into the node server side or you could proxy the two on the same host.
In the end Meteor is pretty amazing and they have their hands full. I wanted to move away from the framework only because I am looking for a job in web development and I have only seen on job posting out of 1000s that had the word Meteor in it.
There's actually a relatively new alternative to Meteor called Meatier. The reason why this project was created:
Meteor is awesome! But after 3 years, it's starting to show it's age. This project is designed to showcase the exact same functionality as Meteor, but without the monolithic structure. It trades a little simplicity for a lot of flexibility.
The project provides a nice overview of differences between Meteor and Meatier and explains why. There has been a discussion going on at Crater.io to ask the opinion of Meteor developers, which is worth to check out as well.
Volt is another universal app framework based in Ruby. Based on Opal which compiles Ruby to JS!
An alternative of media is done for the fixation of the new schemes for the people. The entire scheme of the media and superriorpapers.net is implemented for the success in life. The chatter is moved for the happiness of the candidates.

You can try out Hoodie. And here is a Meteor per feature alternatives list. Other than these I am not sure of any other alternatives.
