Hey everyone, I am new in the chat and currently self study programming myself. I live currently in Sydney Australia, studying as well. I I have questions raised after watching youtube channels of american software engineers (who has 10+ experience in the industry) where they shared their opinions about career as a developer, work and their personal life in general. they have shared so much in different topics. For example,
Firstly, They have mentioned the money should not be big motivation when you are learning programming, even when you are applying for the jobs. Instead, focusing on culture of the company how they treat their employees, what benefits they provide, treat you like what you worth. As some of them told that they have been in stress so much to keep the deadlines, they spoke about working extra hours for free, competetion, fear of losing corporate jobs, communication between your manager and coworkers like it is race or not creative environment where you are like product which can be sold or got rid of easily if they find something more valuable. You are disposable resource for them, they said. they have mentioned some of the companies may take your whole life which you could spend on your family or your side hustles that could bring you more money. (being Underpaid, so much work type of job, with extra management stress).
Secondly, after working so many years as senior software engineer, some of them mentioned that they got burn out from their job, they lose their interest or passion in new technologies, they start thinking whether their life is writing code and sit in front of the desk 8 hours a day. For them new technologies, new frameworks and doesnt bring any interest at all. As you grow older and when you have a family and children, you start judging your purpose of being programmer and meaning in what you do. what is it? MOney? They feel burned out from the job coz of constant of coding, even they get older like 35- 45, they have to keep learning new stuff just to keep their position longer. as some of them said, as you get older your employibility goes down as well, unless you are up-to-date all the time with technologies. They dont have same passion(lost motivation) when they started learning programming anymore because they earn good money, they know most of the things(which gets old year by year),either got bored from the job, or they have achieved what they wanted in the beginning. they lose their track or goals or something.
1) MY question is do you feel the same way like them? Maybe you are younger than them but is there something relatable? Just wanted to ask question from my fellow russian speaking online acquitances
As I am learning programming, I feel like you need to have gameplan what you are gonna do when you get older so I dont get bored from the job or lose my hope or love for the life and happiness. Overall, all what we need is happiness after all.
2) How do you act when you feel the same way? Do you start your own side business? side project? or keep learning new stuff like AR/VR, machine learning, robotics to keep your passion for IT. How do you manage your financial side? Do you invest, spend on business, create onlines business(dropshipping/Amazon FBA/ Stock Investing/real Estate)? What do you do?
I feel like I dont want to learn programming just for the sake of money. I want to feel happy when I do what I love to do. After some videos, most people actually said it is sad reality of the industry. IT is lucrative path however, if you dont know what you are doing and you dont like what you are doing, it is easy to fall into the trap of depression. Happy Healthy programming career with good gameplan for future is important.
What do you think? Let me know your opinion on it. It would be really helpful. Thank you.
