Open source has become the backbone of modern software development.
From React, Linux, Node.js, Kubernetes, and VS Code to newer projects like NativeBase and gluestack-ui, developers are building applications faster than ever using tools created and maintained by communities around the world.
What's fascinating is how the definition of contribution has expanded. Today, open source isn't just about writing code. Documentation, tutorials, bug reports, design systems, testing, and community support all play a major role in helping projects grow.
At the same time, AI is changing how software is built. Developers can generate code, automate workflows, and ship products much faster than before.
This raises an interesting question:
Will AI encourage more people to contribute to open source, or will it create a future where most developers simply consume open source projects without actively participating in them?
I'd love to hear from the community:
Which open source project has had the biggest impact on your career?
What was your first open source contribution?
Are there any underrated open source projects more developers should know about?
Looking forward to hearing your experiences and discovering new projects.
