Hi, I'm new to linux, but have been using mac and the mac terminal. I just bought a new machine with really nice hardware and decided to go with windows because the same specs for mac would've costed me hundreds of dollars more.
I'm trying to decide between ubuntu or elementary os for a linux os. Which would be easiest for me to learn (coming from a mac background) and which would you recommend?
Both are debian based. Both have nice UI. Ubuntu has a "unique" ui, while Elementary OS has a Mac-based UI. Ubuntu is a little more stable than Elementary. But you can pick what you want.
Hey guys, update on this: Ended up going with Elementary OS for its ease of use. It works as well as Ubuntu (at least I haven't run into any major issues with it). Appstore is a little small, but I mostly install packages through my terminal anyway. Everything looks nice and functions well, so no issues yet. Generally if I want to install an application and there's a stackoverflow question on downloading/installing that specific application for Ubuntu, the directions will work for me too (using ElementaryOS).

I tried Elementary OS for a while, but the long time between releases left me with a choice between running outdated packages or tinkering with things to get more recent versions installed.
You can install the Pantheon desktop environment on top of Ubuntu, which will give you the pretty much the same desktop experience on top of a more mainstream base.
