• Coffee (weblog.200ok.com.au/2009/04/coffee-theory.html)
• A good text editor that you're properly familiar with; that allows for author-time quality tooling, git notation, etc. I prefer a cross-platform option like Sublime.
• bash prompt with various aliases and scripts (particularly for git).
• Sufficiently quiet environment, plus great headphones.
• A really good chair (for my home office I saved up and bought a Mirra); generally good ergonomics.
• Two monitors or one really big one. You need enough real estate to do side-by-side comparisons of code and other docs; to have your editor and build open at once; etc. A lot of the time you don't 100% need this - but when you do need it you really benefit from it.
• git + pull requests for collaboration with other coders.
• Your preferred operating system, whatever that is. There's no benefit forcing a dev to use an OS if they're not productive. There's no one OS that's right for everyone. To give the literal answer though, I mostly use OSX and Win10 (plus a little linux, mostly on RPi).

My personal setup also requires some ergonomic hardware to avoid RSI problems. I have the exact same models at home and work to minimise the impact of switching:

• Top of the line MacBook Pro (I just want the hardware to get out of the way)
• An OS that also gets the heck out of the way (OSX has very annoying quirks, I'd prefer something like awm but that seamlessly supported the underlying platform)
• A trackball (Logitech M570) - Have been using one for many years, can't stand a mouse anymore, though I wish companies would innovate trackballs as they do with mouses
• At least one big monitor, ideally two (plus the laptop's screen)
• A big adjustable desk with arm for the monitors (still on my wishlist)
• Laptop stand
• Good wireless keyboard (non-existent IMO, so I settle with Logitech's K750)
• Multiport USB charger (didn't know I needed it until I got it, pretty neat to have)
• Leet 200mbps fiber (could probably live with 20mbps, but can't go back once tasted hehe)
• Tablet for easy always-on time tracking (I use play.google.com/store/apps/details)
• Private home office with a view -- also on wishlist :D
• Pavlok.com -- yep, need real "motivation" sometimes

Things which make me do stuff better

• One big monitor and one smaller one (but not small!). Tests with a third big monitor came to the conclusion that a third monitor is very useful when you do something in parallel to developing (like upgrading my Gentoo). On that note: I really like my Apple Cinematic for working with Photoshop and images as it keeps the colors "true" for bad viewing angles.
• Stereo + steady music (for ex. electronica; look for 1h+ mixes on SoundCloud)
• Depending on what I plan to do either cold beer (creativity++) or some cups of coffee (productivity++)
• Big desk
• (Physical) notepad and pen
• Good keyboard
• Nicely tuned OS settings (dark skin, balanced mouse sensitivity, no annoying pop-ups,...)
• Good lighting (not too bright, but not too dark, either)
• Open windows (fresh air + some background noise)

Just fill me up with sugar and I could work all day. Without 2 monitors. :)
