I have no experience with screen recorders, but I have plans in the future to make some video's where screen recording will be necessary.
I have tested Camstudio on my laptop, and it's incredibly easy to get recordings with. Setup is simple, operation is simple. But I have no idea if it's a top free solution, much less a top solution at all.
I'm hoping this question gets answered by someone who knows what they are doing!

You should check OBS Studio. It's available for Windows, MacOS and Linux. It supports video recording and live streaming. It's easy to be configured and full of features like filters for video sources, audio mixer, profile switching, color correction, and color keying. Oh, and it's totally free.
