I am not sure what to think. He is known to be rude and he should adopt a different way to critic other people. I personally don't care, but I was never in the line of fire. Lets see if he comes back and how :)
The tricky part here is that people tend to adopt the pattern of behaviour of other successful people. I hope this will resonate with the rest of developers who tend to behave like this, but don't expect to see any significant changes in a short span of time.
Milica I am not a sociologist but adopting 1 strategy out of N for success to me is just 1 out of N. Personally I don't condone his behaviour, but I also don't care. Not because I don't empathize with sara sharp or how he said that people who need a debugger are f*cking morons and so on, but because I never personally was attacked by him.
We can argue on hypothetical grounds about social structures, imitation, male archetypes or as on twitter the question if a women would've been allowed to show such behaviour.
Those are valid points, I am still not a mob mentality person, I see his flaws I see the damage he probably caused on the way, but I also reap the benefits of his works and those around him.
I am more of an existentialist than an utilitarian so the question of good or bad is a more circumstantial to me. It does not mean I say those the he harmed should forgive him, this is between him and them.
I think he should make an amends by those he did wrong and then the people working with him should decide how they handle it. Not a group of strangers projecting our worldviews on their relations. To me he has a temper and he need to control it.
About the 1 of N strategy, maybe it will be better, maybe less people will be assholes in positions of power, maybe we can change our natures.
I believe in self-determination and emancipation and I didn't see linus working with kids which are more impressionable and where most patterns are planted in young years.
Anyhow .... I'm digressing.
I respect your opinion and concerns about it. I still don't agree with your reasoning, it is one factor we should be concerned about yes. But the idea of him poisoning the well .... seem to be conjecture.
But as you said, we will see! if this really brings the change the community wants or needs it would be nice.
Heh, I could have put that better together j
So, I'm not saying he should be thrown rocks at, I'm just happy that he realized that he should improve the way he communicates. I'd like to see him back doing what he's best at, but also providing others with more constructive feedback, not ad hominem insults.
The Linux community is very diverse, and there are ones who defend their bad behavior by pointing fingers at Linus. I just hope that people finally realize that insulting people doesn't do the job but that providing constructive feedback and criticism does.
I also think that we as people, in general, have a long way to go. This is just one example, there are many others who lead companies, communities, and who are painfully unaware of how their actions affect others. This is what I was thinking about when I said that I don't expect to see significant changes. Sorry for not being very clear 🙂
Milica good point, I personally don't know anyone in the kernel community, but people can be stupid so I guess there are those who have the god complex and justifying themselves by being like linus, jobs or musk who in general are not known for their kindness but for their drive.
I agree with your assessment of not being aware and that we as humans still have a long way to go. I am not sure if that's correct direction but maybe it's time for a change. I am a sucker for history so I like empiric longterm studies. Change is inevitable lets see where it leads, maybe the world is better if we're all nice to each other. I personally prefer it :D
