These are all from from a big company style guide/conventions (Java):

Don't put any logic (incl validation) in getters and setters.
Don't use assert statements.
Store results in fields instead of using return values and arguments.
For error handling, use return true/false for status, and manually copy a result object in case of failure.

I agree with "Don't use assert statements." What's the problem with that?
