Very interested to hear what you guys listen to...On my end always have music on and sometimes am running out of music to listen to.
Here is Soothing Buckethead playlist on Spotify, one of my favorite playlist to turn on while coding
I listen to "The silent partner" he's a really great artist. All of his music are relaxing and perfect for long hours coding projects.
[Coldplay] (http://coldplay.com/) and Family Of The Year
Any mixes by this guy
Plus these total legends
I found this post last time. Some great playlist ;) fastcompany.com/3027907/what-engineers-at-faceboo…
It really depends on the mood, the ambient noise and the complexity of the tasks. It could go from very soothing soundtracks to extreme metal, with many kind of jazz or math-rock in between ;-) Some samples:
When there's more ambient noise, then the playlist takes a more metalish atmosphere, these days with sludge like Lumberjack feedback - Dreamcatcher (2 guitars, 1 bass, 2 drums, no vocal), and when I really need to isolate from the environment, I then build a sound wall around me, with stuff like Gojira (The live Aux Vieilles Charrues for instance is great), Gojira - Silvera or Meshuggah Meshuggah - Spasm
And many many other things, I could keep the thread running forever ;-)
I usually put some classic music or just environment music, the spotify have good playlists for concentration, but sometimes a little bit of rock it's good :)
Mostly old school RnB (1990-2004)

I use to listen calm music when i'm wired on my code.. Astrid S, Bryson Tiller, Tory Lanes and Drake
Ps* Je parle français, alors désolé si mon anglais est un peu tordu ;)
I think one nice options it listen a little of Synthwave, i think is really amazing!
Podcasts mostly: music with a steady beat or rhythm like a heart beat... The kind I can zone out and forget the music is on. But every now and again theres a nice build up or it gets interesting and I get all hyped and excited. It helps me to concentrate. I love deep house and soulful house while working :)
Best of Movie Soundtracks by GuiguiF by Guillaume Flahaut on Spotify: open.spotify.com/user/guiguif/playlist/1LvqYvWbQL…
I found this site some time ago: http://musicforprogramming.net The music list it's pretty nice and help me to keep my focus while working, it's interesting what they say in the about section.
I listen to a mix of country, jazz, rock, alternative, pop, electronic folk and some good oldies. I'm not really picky about most music just as long as it doesn't make me want to slam my head into a wall. Granted the music I enjoy listening to would make some want to slam their heads into a wall. But, when I really have to concentrate to think through an algorithm, database structure or solve a problem, I turn the music off but keep the ear buds in to block out all other noise. Gist: I found something that works for me and I stick with it.
Epic movie soundtracks. Just look up "epic music" in YouTube. Or anything from audiomachine. Occasionally classical... prefer more lively classical... something with strings and fast-paced.
I usually listen to some Chiptunes (ie: Big Giant Circles, Popskyy), or I listen to ESPN radio, depends on my mood. It's good to have some background noise :)
Deep dive coding: psytrance and goa, some electronic and industrial works too but mostly trance. Repetitive bleepy stuff with high BPM, as little lyrical content as possible, ideally really long playlists/mixes. I have a few psytrance lists saved on Spotify :)
General coding: almost anything, although a lot of industrial, electronic, rock and metal. If I'm struggling with focus I might go with triphop, dub or generally downbeat stuff.
Bugfixing or "I have a really tight deadline to deal with" coding: metal or something angry. Really stubborn bugs get the White Zombie treatment, I don't know why that works but it does.
More often than I'd like to admit: absolutely nothing, I just forgot to take off my headphones when the music stopped and it's quiet in here and please go away I'm coding.... ;)
The anti-answer is probably worth noting too... I really REALLY struggle to work if people are playing mainstream/pop stuff on speakers - I can't tune it out and I get really tired really fast trying to do so. In fact almost anything on speakers is bad. I think there should be a 100% headphones rule in open plan offices - even if you all love the same music, it's unlikely you want to listen to exactly the same thing at the same time at the same volume.
Hum....spotify...need help with your algorithms???
