In my opinion, asking if ruby is better than python is like asking if an iphone is better than an android phone. Both are phones and they have their advantages and disadvantages. And one person will prefer one over the other based upon their preferences.
To answer your question I would go with python because I think it is more relevant nowadays, I believe the community is bigger and you can do more things with it. But it definitely does not mean it is better.
Good Point. Although both python and ruby can do the same things, they might accomplish them differently. If I were packaging an app or dealing with large data, I would go with python. If I was going to be making a large web app, I would go with Ruby on Rails.
