Milica Maksimović yes I agree, Mac's hardware is very expensive. But looking at the tools and development environment they provide in OS, I'm ready to pay for it (not right now :P)

Josh Montgomery I too have built a PC that costs around $1500. But working with MacBooks for a while, I feel that I made a big mistake. Whenever there is a meeting or travel, it's really a pain! I've also seen that high-end PCs need around 16GB of RAM to run our dev environment. But Macbook's having 8GB ram are running them smoothly. I've got similar opinions from my friends working at Expedia and IBS. They all have switched from Windows to Macbook for this reason.

Whenever I search for tools like Client for Postgres, Git GUI, most of the popular software says "Download for Windows/MacOS". All of my colleagues use Mac (it works!) :(

• There is Gitkraken and GitAhead (the best) GUI for Linux.
• Here is Navicat GUI for all SQL clients and servers
• Here is DBeaver
• Here is pgAdmin

Poor UX, constant switching between GNOME and Ubuntu One. I appreciate Windows on their speed of improvements in UX

Before calling me any sarcastic words, I am a Mac user for a decade. I warn you not to buy, because if you purchase the latest Apple computers, you will be locked and will not be able to iQuit or will be iHanged by Apple, I mean, you will not be able to upgrade the memory, HDD, SSD or then the processor because everything is soldered The new law of Apple forbids you of lending your computer to the third party IT technicians for repairing. If you want to buy the topmost Apple computer and want only with macOS, the problem is yours, but do not come to complain and to cry when you break something, can not afford paying more 1k dollars for a repair in the Apple Store. Do not try to make it on a non-Apple IT repair shop, because you will be deprived of everything and seized by Apple.

Do not try to buy old Apple computers, because macOS has already gotten increasingly slower and Linux does not fit well on old Apple computers due to numberless breakdowns.

Gustavo Benedito Costa Thanks for your reply! I'm not saying Ubuntu have tools/software, yes they have clients for Postgres, git GUIs. But nothing is smooth and performing well as software in Mac.

I agree that most of the Apple hardware is not upgradable. But I'm not seeing that as a big issue. I built my current PC 5 years ago. I haven't upgraded any parts yet. Just choose the best spec while buying, that's it. And when I buy a MacBook, I'm not planning to use it for more than 5 years.

Can you suggest a laptop that's powered by SSD, runs development tools smoothly, good battery life as MacBook Air, lightweight, and that's under $1000? I couldn't find a good one.

It depends on what you are doing more. If you use heavy IDEs like JetBeans or XCode or then VSCode, and also if you want to run the virtual machine of Linux or Windows.

• If you only play with git, Postgres and with few heavy IDES like JetBeans apps, VSCode and XCode and lightweight text editors like Sublime Text and to upgrade the RAM, the SSD and add a HDD and do not care about the old Apple computers:

  • Core i7
  • 16GB RAM
  • SSD of 125GB
  • HDD of 500GB
  • Years 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
  • Do not buy the 2017s Apple computers.

• If you want to run the virtual machine:

  • SSD of 256GB
  • HDD of 1 or 2TB
  • Same years

• If you do not care about upgrading the parts, just do not run the virtual machine, do not save too much on the SSD, use ones apps and save on the external HDD/SSD.

As you are from India, it is hard to find and buy a MacBook Air with these specifications. You need to get a MacBook Air with 8GB RAM and Core i7, and then you can upgrade to 16GB RAM.

I do not know any Indian technology shop sites that sell refurnished/second-hand MacBooks Air. I know only Aliexpress and eBay. As at the Aliexpress, the MacBooks Air are in China, you will find only the latest MacBook Aires unless you want to use 16GB RAM and to add a second HDD/SSD.
