I was having this discussion with a friend who said if they had a million dollar they would probably open a cafe and forget coding.
Unfortunately, this is the case with some people I know. They code primarily because of money. So, if there is no real need for money, they will probably stop coding.
What’s your take on this?
I will call you in my office :D And then we'll discuss what to do next?
To have a cup of tea or coffee? - It's still while coding!!!

I would enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle with better food, wine, and service in better digs...as I code (stuff I pick with collaborators of my choosing).
I will probably always be coding and leaning about it. I would possibly consider a full switch into illustration, or board game design (other loves of mine) - but to be totally honest, I know I would miss software design and development. I'm am certain I would develop a digital platform for sharing my work if this were the case.
Currently, I work in the reverse - often trying to integrate traditional illustration into digital stuff, like this team workflow poster I made a few jobs back:

But yeah, I don't see myself ever completely walking away from code. ;)
Coding is like food to me. Coding makes me feel like I did something good today, let it be my office work of personal work.
If I get 100M USD, I would code of course, but from different places in the world every time because travelling is my second favourite thing after coding :D.
I tend to think that those who would quit just because they got enough money to live and never code again are those who:
What I or friends of mine do in that situation? We'll do what we love and enjoy just as much as before, with the exception that we could afford ~£75M worth of equipment/leasure/...
I think I will still code.
I am being a software developer not just for money. It makes me grow as a person and as a developer also.
I'd die of boredom without work so I'd still be involved in the tech industry. However, I'd likely shift my attention to exploring newer better ways of development. Basically, I'd fund my own research into programming languages, compilers, software architecture, etc.
I have some days where I'd even want to show up in the office, paid or not, just to work on some of our projects (and I actually enjoy most of my coworkers). I have other days where you could give me just a plane ticket to some Tibetan monestary where I could avoid electricity (and therefore computers at all) and I wouldn't bat an eyelash.
Depends entirely on what bugs I've written lately and how hard they're biting me in the ass.
As per what I have realized about myself, I never thought of coding as just a means of earning money. I do it at work, enjoy it at home at day, night and weekends. The fun (and satisfaction) that you get out of it cannot be directly measured with money (though you still need money to pay your bills and feed yourself and your dependents).
If I were to ever get a chance to change my profession, I would go for it but I'd still be coding during my personal time (who knows at work as well) as my profession and my hobby just coincidentally happen to be the same. In fact, I did not originally wanted to pursue this profession. This may definitely be different for others though.
Coding is fun, but for me, solving real world problems is even more fun, with or without coding.
What I see around me is that most people seem to be completely unaware of their surroundings, or can't match a necessity to a solution.
Coding is great until you reach a certain level, above that, you should be able to put your hands in the dirt and build something else from it. Coding is like playing in a box, however great solutions are created outside of the box :D.
Answering the main post. I would definitely be coding with 100M in the bank. But I wold also invest some time in some other projects to create useful information / content or any product not directly connected to technology., to solve some sort of world needs, like food chain, water supply, social care, etc.
Personally I hate the idea of surviving off of savings. If I was to win the lottery I would feel like I was cheating. I would take some money out to improve things (new computer, new TV, new car, etc...) but the rest would go in an ISA. I would keep working and coding until I reach retirement and whatever I have in the pot I will use to survive
Yes, I think I would be very bored without coding every day. I'd probably enhance my coding experience with some nice hardware/software.
Oh man.. I would finally have to time get all those side project up and running...
I would do something like Elon Musk did with SpaceX but for coders, and create awesome applications and projects. Would for sure still code at least some!
Coding is already loads of fun, imagine doing it without constantly compromising quality because of business demands!
I think I might code more.
The fire of building things has been with me since I was a kid and was with me even when there was no money. My interests are not just coding. I love electronics but then I built a working prototype of a steam engine during my school days (Mechanical was my first love). If I had 100M USD, I think I would spend as much as possible, donate as much as possible and build a few things that I have always wanted to. I would probably mix things up between Coding, Mech, Electronics and my one side love for math. All in all, would not stop improving myself/building things that includes coding too.
I will code for a few hours every day. But, if I have 100M USD, I will take most of the money and deploy it in all my hobby projects.
Some of the projects I like to get done are: App Reputation: Right now, all gamification is done by individual apps. For eg, Hashnode has reputation, StackOverflow has some reputation and so on. I want to centralise all reputation on a Blockchain so that it is not tampered with and is also made available in a central app.
Spend some money to irritate big enterprises like SAP, SalesForce by helping Open Source Software to compete with the big guys.
Bid on Indian government contracts and make the systems robust.
Fight for the cause of privacy by making people aware that governments are the biggest abusers of privacy of citizens.
Fight for minimum wages in India and make the minimum wages calculated on a hourly basis and make it INR 100 /hour.
100M$ may not be enough for all of this. I hope some of the initiatives will be money-making so I can use that money to work on my causes.
Yes because I just enjoy coding. I already proved this by coding for 3 years unprofessionally.
I've been building several applications for no money for many of my colleagues so that I'd be occupied enjoying coding 😄 so introducing large sum of money in my bank account wouldn't affect me doing the same I guess
I would still code and invest the $1 million for good cause.
