Developing and supporting your local tech community ๐ป๐
I love what the tech community has to offer.
Truly, and overall, it is one of the best communities today. There is so much to do within the thriving space, and there are so many ways we can all be a part of the continual growth.
Meetups, Hackathons, Mentoring, Volunteering, Public Speaking. So much! Itโs like everything rolled into one! ๐
What I love seeing the most is people within the community giving back in a positive way. It really is a beautiful feeling to see so many new faces within the tech community on a regular basis, and as a community providing# incredible support and mentoring is one of the many reasons why I admire this space so much.
A small part of what I do in my time is finding ways to create meaningful and positive relationships within the space overall. In addition to that, I love attending meetups and mentoring and giving back in any way I can.
And best of all, itโs so much fun and everyone is so supportive of each other!!! ๐
Back in 2019, I presented at one of the meetups we organised where anyone within the community can meet and share their knowledge & wisdom with each other. Itโs also open for everyone to attend - all are welcome! ๐ We also use it as an opportunity for anyone to present a topic they are passionate about, but also we discovered itโs a great way to build experience & confidence in public speaking. In short, the best of both worlds.
I would like to share with you the ways in which we can all develop and support the tech community. Together.
Whether you are new to the exciting community or continuing your journey, I would like to help you, support you, and motivate you towards helping, supporting and motivating this exciting space. There are many ways to support the scene and develop a thriving community:
MEETUPS ๐ค
Meetups are the best - Super fun, super engaging and super incredible. There are so many to choose from, but most importantly you learn something new every time you attend. Itโs also a great way to build connections, meet new friends, and of course, have fun! You can find cool tech meetups & events via Meetup.com and Eventbrite, which are just some of the many fantastic ways to find awesome meetups in your area.
SUPPORT | VOLUNTEER | MENTOR ๐ค
Supporting, volunteering and mentoring is for anyone and for everyone. In particular with mentoring at coding workshops or hackathons, you are also continuing your learning journey, building upon your skill set and growth mindset. There are so many coding workshops available for everyone in a safe, inclusive, supportive and friendly environment for all to enjoy from absolute beginners to advanced.
ENGAGE WITH THE COMMUNITY ๐
Lightning talks and public speaking are great avenues to talk about an area of interest you are passionate about. There are so many meetups always looking for new speakers to present, technical and non-technical. You can also share your knowledge and inspiration via forms of social media, such as Twitter and LinkedIn. They can be about your coding journey, growth mindset, tips & tricks for a coding language, or what you learned from that cool meetup you went to. The sky's the limit!
I would like to share with you all my 3 top tips to help you with your tech journey. But most importantly how to #lovewhatyoudo and #dowhatyoulove
1. Accept new challenges
Challenges can be daunting and scary at the same time. At some point in our careers, weโve all come across a challenging task and immediately thought โI have no idea how to accomplish this task! Help me!โ But what I have learned to realise over time, is by accepting new challenges you are creating an opportunity to open your mind and think outside the box. Embracing new challenges is about stepping out of your comfort zone while focusing on success, not problems.
2. Donโt be afraid to make mistakes
Honestly, donโt be afraid of it. Making mistakes are designed to create paths to learn from those mistakes. But at the same time, we all fear making those mistakes, and also the fear of embarrassment. Think of mistakes as opportunities to learn, and also as a way to think in a positive light. We want to make mistakes because itโs one of the many creative ways to grow and develop into who we want to be.
3. Ask lots of questions
YES! Ask heaps of questions! There is nothing wrong with that. We ask questions because we are curious to know and do more, and this is absolutely okay. If you are unsure, ask away. Always be curious to learn and do more.
My bonus tip to #lovewhatyoudo and #dowhatyoulove
BE HAPPY ๐
Happiness and health is the key, across all areas.
Letโs all continue to motivate and support each other, and the community.
