Problems installing the expo-cli

I've been trying for the past few hrs to install the expo-cli and I keep getting this warning:

tarball data for @expo/traveling-fastlane-darwin@1.9.11 (sha512-nvZSe2FI8cFcv27uosrmjIhfwbuClG+rbMe9OswsdhIVaJkYvF8LN8gIJ/Fsi2S+20GQizxjC11DFq++MOCm+w==) seems to be corrupted. Trying one more time.

and then it just hangs there for a really long time and crashes out with expo-cli being installed at all. I've cleared my npm cache, updated node and checked the expo-cli issues on github with no solution in sight. Has anyone here had this experience? How did you solve it? It's truly unfortunate that getting started with any technology should be this ridiculously tedious
