In his case, he was 'jolted aside' for requirements they never stated. Since they brought in a lawyer, he should have informed his parents or peers, or reached out to a willing party/lawyer(it's good to have some of them as friends) who would have helped to salvage the situation.
These companies are funny. I'm beginning to be suspicious of startups or tech agencies these days.
