I have a questions..... The 'who are they question' in identifying who your audience is.. Does it depend on who you want your speech to be for.. or on the people that are present in the audience.

It's a mixture of both. When you understand the type of audience that will be present, you will tailor your talk for them. So if you want your speech to be for beginners then the expected audience are supposed to be beginners as well.

I think, I would be emphasising on the fact you mentioned, one need different preparation, research, content for the same subject based on who the target audience is.. An expert or a beginner..
