I think what is amazing about PHP is how long it survived. I would have jumped ship a long time ago, however, it has really evolved into a better language. I came from writing perl and CGI scripts to PHP and now I see myself learning NodeJS. PHP could easily evolve into something similar. I am excited for the next 20 years.
I've used Mailgun, it is pretty nice and Rackspace has made it easy to implement into any project. One issue I had with Mailgun was the time frame to send a few emails. it would get accepted and take a good 5-10 minutes to send. Once Rackspace cleans up their issues, i feel like it could be the perfect solution(I unfortunately don't have much experience in any other Mail API though).
I find that most people who hate PHP is due to them not using it enough to understand how it works or they were editing code from a bad program/programmer. I could say I hate insert language because i am not as familiar to it, then I am with insert language like anyone else. But, I personally am more open minded and feel all languages have a purpose. They were usually created for a reason. As a side note, I also find people hating PHP version 4. They don't even know PHP 7 exists, let alone PHP 5, and it is really awesome.
Thanks! I rent from another company the servers. I just like the flexibility of Magento. Not sure if Magento Community will work for this as well. I am on a very tight timeline with a very small team, so, I think I will just eat the cost for this year and see about when upgrading if I should try out CE or a hosted solution. Side question: Is there a hosted solution that is not only PCI compliant but allowed developers to make customization(plugins/extensions)?
