Let me just say that while most tutorials use Heroku I believe that's because it's easy and doing your own deployment is not. There are many 'how to's' out there for deploying a ruby app, heck digital ocean has one, but there are few tutorials (to me a tutorial explains the logic/rationale behind the things) and I've been looking for a good deploying tutorial for a long while.
