Not sure about the default Firefox tools, but Firebug definitely feels faster and stable than Chrome dev tools, There's always a lag or some hiccup here and there in Chrome.. They're integrating Firebug right into Firefox tools now, so that's definitely a good sign! I think it's a good time to revisit. :) In terms of features though, I think chrome is more evolved atm.
