Ramsey Elkholy is a guitarist, producer, songwriter, and anthropologist who launched the indietronica collective Monotronic in 2016. He designed the project as a collaborative ecosystem in which instruments intertwine into a cohesive voice. Rooted in a communal philosophy, the group favors shared creativity over individual spotlight, encouraging each musician to contribute their personality and texture to a unified, immersive sound.
Beyond music, Elkholy completed a PhD in Anthropology and authored Being and Becoming: Embodiment and Experience Among the Orang Rimba of Sumatra. The book explores the lives of rainforest foragers in Indonesia and their relationship with the landscape and ritual. His academic work shapes his artistic outlook, as questions of identity, environment, and collective life inform the tone and structure of his compositions.
Travel has been central to his development. After three years backpacking internationally, studying Indian music in Calcutta, and conducting extended research in Sumatra, Ramsey developed a deep appreciation for layered rhythm and organic sound. He has described the rainforest at night as a vast tapestry of interlocking pulses. Raised in New York, he now creates from a home studio in Los Angeles.
Monotronic’s 2026 album Waiting for You reflects that global and collaborative spirit. The record features bassist Mohini Dey on "Close Enough" and renowned drummer Omar Hakim throughout. Music videos for tracks such as Looking Away and Everything Moves premiered at number one on VEVO, underscoring the band’s growing reach and visual ambition.
Blending indie rock, pop, and electronic production, the album pairs introspective lyrics with expansive, synth-driven arrangements. Everything Moves unfolds in a dynamic escape-room setting, while Kettle Song incorporates stylized choreography and cinematic imagery. Many songs were written during time spent in Tulum, where coastal solitude helped shape the album’s reflective atmosphere.
Since their 2019 self-titled debut, Ramsey Elkholy Monotronic has received acclaim from outlets including Rolling Stone and Relix. The collective has included musicians with connections to artists such as Chic and Daft Punk. Singles like Kids of Summer and In Between earned strong playlist placements and critical praise, reinforcing his reputation for thoughtful songwriting and genre-fluid production.
