I had bad experiences with Ubuntu in 2004, moved to Debian and I'm happy ever since. Debian in past was lacking several things but at the moment it is pretty polished and functional from end-users' perspective. For better and faster results (I'm impatient!) I suggest installing Debian from a special build which contain additional [non-free] firmware and drivers. It will recognize your wireless card and eventually other uncommon pieces of hardware you may have. https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/9.3.0+nonfree/amd64/iso-dvd/firmware-9.3.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso You may also be interested in my post installation scripts. In particular, I'm consolidating all useful stuff into a single script, which is meant to be executed first thing after you install Debian: https://github.com/frgomes/debian-scripts/blob/master/install-000-postinstall.sh Other useful stuff you may or may not be interested: http://github.com/frgomes/debian-bin I hope it helps.
