I picked up HTML in 1994, putting my first website online a year later. CSS wasn’t around back then. It lived on a tilde-domain since TLDs weren’t easily available and certainly not affordable. I learned everything i needed from a book, which has later turned into a website: selfhtml.org (It’s all written in german). The web was wild and small back then. :)

Ha! Exactly.

magic, you can put something on the web and other people could see it

That feeling of magic never really left me, luckily. It was also the key moment for me. This and being able to download drivers for my graphics card at 2am and from a remote server haha. Bevor that one had to buy magazines, including CDs containing all the latest software.

Haha, I remember those days where you would still get articles like "To CSS or not to CSS" where people would compare the pros and cons of using CSS - this was when CSS just started emerging and it was magic, no more changing a font colour in 100 different locations, now I can do it with one line of CSS :-D Before then, pure HTML was also magic, you can put something on the web and other people could see it - that's if they had internet access.
